Smoking
& Covid-19
The coronavirus Covid-19 is rapidly causing what appears to be the worst public health crisis in a generation. The pandemic is threatening to overwhelm healthcare systems, and we must all do our part to help.
Recent studies have indicated that smoking increases an individual’s likelihood of contracting Covid-19 and needing critical care.

Correlation between smokers and severe Corona cases

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) has recently listed smokers as a vulnerable group. Although the coronavirus Covid-19 is a novel virus, and there is therefore much that we still do not know with certainty regarding how it affects individuals, several recent studies have indicated that smokers are at greatly increased risk. They may be as much as 140% more likely to die from Covid-19 and 240% more likely to require intensive medical care.

Smoking and the immune system

Smoking has long been acknowledged as the worlds leading cause of preventable deaths. This occurs through a large number of negative side-effects, however, what is of particular importance at this time is that smoking weakens the body’s immune system. This leads to greater susceptibility to infections such as pneumonia, influenza, and other more severe respiratory illnesses such as the coronavirus Covid-19.

Smoking related diseases and Corona

In addition to a weakened immune system, it is important to be aware that several of the pre-existing conditions that are considered Covid-19 risk factors can be caused by smoking. A prime example is the lung disorder chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is considered one of the main underlying Covid-19 risk factors. The leading cause of this condition is smoking.
